(1) Social causes of War- conflict over land and other natural resources (water, oil…..)- conflict over values and ideologies (World War II: democracy/fascism) (The Cold War: capitalism/communism)- racial, ethnic, and religious hostilities-defense against hostile attacks-revolution-nationalism WHY DO WE GO TO WAR? (2) Factors which increase the likelihood that a war will occur…… 1. Easy victory : when conquest is seen as being easy for one side 2. Optimism: when a nation is overly confident about the outcome of a potential conflict 3. First strike : when a nation‘s leaders determine that making the initial move will give them advantage 4. Threat : stemming from impending danger 5.
