Notes on “The Values Americans Live By” by: Robert Kohls By: Jasmine McElroy @02652197 Each person has his or her values, which are not the same as anyone else’s There are, however, some values that most Americans commonly share For over 1/3 of a century, the Washington International Center staff has been getting feedback from foreign visitors, which has caused them to look at Americans through the eyes of those visitors o The 13 common American values compiled explain about 95% of the ways Americans act Most Americans find their values to be positive, although people from other countries may or may not think so American Values 1. Personal Control Over the Environment o Americans think they can individually control environmental factors; don’t believe as much in Fate anymore 2. Change o Americans think change is good (b/c linked to development, o Other societies think change is bad (b/c its supposedly disruptive, destructive, and unstable)
