"Search for Sense" Concept= Generalized mental image of objects Properties= qualities or attributes that are usually peculiar to an object Referent= thinking of a property in terms of a more familiar object ex: "sky  blue" Measurement= process of comparing a property to a well-defined and  agreed upon referent Unit= the well-defined and agreed upon referent Measurement process: o Comparing the referent to the property o Following a procedure o Counting how many united describe the property o Contains a number and a value= number of referent units Standard unit= the referent unit o English System= based on parts of the human body o Metric System, SI= based on referents in nature 7 Base Units Length Mass Time Electric Current Temperature Amount of Substance Light Intensity Metric System o Fundamental property= cannot be defined in simpler terms other  than to describe how it is measured Length- Meter Mass- Kilogram "measure of inertia" Time - Second

Charge Data= measurement information used to describe something Ratio= relationship between two numbers Density Ratio= Mass/ Volume Quanities= measured properties Symbol= clue about which quanity is being represented Equations= uses symbols to describe relationships where the quanities on  one side of the equal sign are identical to the quanities on the other side o 1. Describe a property o 2.  Define a concept o 3. Describe how quanities change relative to eachother Variable= specific quanity of an object that can have different  values Direct Proportion= when two variables increase or decrease together in  the same ratio Inverse proportion= When one variable increases, and the other  decreases in the same ratio Proportionality Constant= to make a statement of proportionality into an  equation, might not have units Nature of Science o First scientists were "natural philosophers" Scientific investigation= provides understanding through experimental  evidence Hypothesis= tentative thought, or experiment derived explanation Controlled experiment= compares to situations in which all the influencing  factors are identical except one Scientific law= describes an important relationship that is observed in  nature to occur consistently time after time,  WHAT  happens in nature Scientific principle= more specific set of relationships that is usually  identified in a law Model= description of a theory or idea that accounts for all known  properties o Physical o Computer o Analogy o Equation
