Connolly 1 Nicholas Connolly Eng 112 Dr. Rees April 30 th , 2009 The Truth About Language Language opens many doors but also closes others. Along with its positive affect on people and our world, it has also has created a barrier to the human mind. Language gives us the ability to communicate through the use of words. Words provide meaning, which expands points of view and many areas of thought. Those that feel bounded by words alone are put short because their inability to expand conceptually and logically through the use of language. The ability to put language aside gives one the opportunity to reach a higher level of thought process. Three texts that have shown this are The Matrix, Huxley’s The Doors of Perception, and Blake’s’ The Marriage of Heaven and Hell . These three texts, along with a presentation about the brain by Jill Bolte Taylor are all connected together because they illustrate that language restricts humans from seeing beyond reality, and for humans to go beyond this point they need to be introduced to a life altering experience. The Matrix, describes a future where reality is perceived as another world called the Matrix. It is a simulated world made up of code that was created by machines with the intention to control humans . Neo, who is known as “The One”, chooses to see the Matrix and reality for what is it. He is very unfamiliar with this new world and is almost like a child who is seeing and hearing things for the very first time. This allows him to have unlimited thoughts because everything around him is a something new. The Matrix is an illusion of reality, which enables language to replace reality, in that it may be too
