Nicholas Connolly English 262 Dr. Berheim 10/27/2010 “The Character of Janie Avery” Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson is a children’s literature book about two children Jess Aarons and Leslie Burke who connect through their sense of loneliness. Jess, who is the only boy in his family feels neglected most of time by his sisters and parents, and escapes by drawing and practicing to be the fastest kid in the fifth grade. Leslie on the other hand, just moved into town next to Jess from Washington D.C because her parents wanted to reevaluate what’s important in life and she doesn’t have any friends. The two quickly become friends after Jess looses to her in a running race. One day after school they decide to go off into the woods and create an imaginary kingdom called Terabithia where they explore, pretend, and learn about themselves and each other. One significant character in Bridge to Terabithia is Janice Avery. Janice is known as the classic bully in the 7 th grade that everyone is afraid of. This paper will go in-depth into the character of Janice Avery from both the book and the two movies different perspectives by discussing her similarities from the book and the old movie, and
