ITS 201- Chapter 10 Book Notes 26/04/2011 13:47:00 Chapter 10- Africa and the International Community Africa has experience illegitimate and corrupt rule, economic exploitation, and  cultural assault on a large scale African countries were used during the Cold War solely for geopolitical reasons  and strategic raw materials Most African countries lag behind in economic development and democratic  freedoms African Geography and Culture Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and Indian Ocean North Africa= Morocco to Egypt and are mostly Arab and Islamic people Large deserts, high mountains, dense rain forests African political unity and economic development have been hindered by  several geographic disadvantages o Few natural harbors and navigable rivers o Dry seasons last for 6-7 months which hinders agriculture production  o The competition between the pastoralists and nomadic herders for land  have even resulted in ethnic conflict. Ex) Darfur The legitimacy of African state boundaries are disputed because Africans had  little role in drawing them o They were constructed by European imperialists in the 19 th  century o 1/5 of Africa’s borders run across sparsely populated deserts while  many political boundaries divide ethnic groups o Berlin Conference of 1884 finalized the imperial borders of Africa o This made nation-building very difficult because borders don’t follow  ethnic or physical boundaries Ex) Ethiopia and Somalia attacked each other in 1977, and  Ethiopia turned to the Soviet Union and Cuba for weapons. The  end result was drought and famine 1/3 of all Africans are Muslim Africa as Part of World History Western domination of Africa has resulted in disease, primitive tribal customs,  rudimentary economies, and little technological development
