Roman Intro to Education Paper# 2 Due: 3/9/11 Inequality in Education Each morning, students around the country wake up and begin the same systematic procedures in order to prepare themselves for school. Although some students may dread waking up for school, others look forward to it. These students see school as a safe haven, as a place where they can get away from all the problems they may be having at home, and as a place where they can meet up with their friends and interact in a large social community. This pleasant image of the school system which clouds the minds of many young students, also shields them from this corrupt notion of inequality in education. Although these students, and even many adults, may be unaware of inequality in education, it is important to note it does exist and is very much alive in the school system. Jonathan Kozol, Marjorie F. Orellana, and Beth C. Rubin each exploit inequality in education in their articles titled, “Still Separate, Still Unequal: America’s Educational Apartheid”, “The Work Kids Do: Mexican and Central American Immigrant Children’s Contributions to Households and Schools in California”, and “ Tracking and Detracking: Debates, Evidence, and Best Practices for a Heterogeneous World” respectively. These authors share similar thoughts with respect to the general idea of inequality among students in school, and how it is made visible through stereotyping, a portrayal of inferiority versus superiority, and most importantly segregation. Stereotyping among students in school is something that has become more common in modern society. Although all students may be stereotyped in some way, those students who are minorities are affected by stereotyping the most severely. Take African Americans as an example. Society tends to view all blacks as poor and underachieving, and as a result this stereotype has migrated to those schools whose demographics reveal a large percentage of blacks. According to Kozol, “In one makeshift elementary school … in yet another nearly all-black-and-Hispanic
