Alex Fafara Instructor: Dr. Elizabeth Brunazzi Intro to Myth, Section 1 Response Paper 9/25/11 Book 11 of Homer’s Odyssey . Unlike many of my classmates, I personally have had no previous interaction with the Odyssey, and so had no idea what to expect from the story. The first time I read Book 11 for this class, I was a little sleepy and therefore missed a few chunks of important story telling. I thought it was about a war, the battles taking place, the vast armies dwindling, differing points of view, and so on and so forth until I succumbed to dreams. Upon my second reading however, I had a clearer picture of what was going on, at least for this snippet of the overall story. Odysseus has left his homeland, and is on his way to the land of the dead. He and his crew sail across the ocean to the Ocean River’s bounds, where the Cimmerian people reside: read by me as the land of the dead. Odysseus then performs a sacrificial ritual to call the spirits from Erebus. The ritual was so specific and ordered that should anyone attempt it without the proper
