Concepts of disease evolved from diagnostic process Doctors listen to patient Doctor examines the patient Doctor describes symptoms and organized them into clusters Doctors matches observed symptoms cluster with typologies of known symptoms II. Best diagnosis Includes theory of etiology ( cause of disease) Includes a theory of treatment III. Adequate diagnosis Can observe symptoms accurately No good theory of causation Good treatment developed through trial and error rather than theory IV. Poor diagnosis No clear description, no theory of causation; no theory of treatment V. Specific problems w/ diagnoses Individual variability in body functions complicates diagnosis Lack of consensus about symptom clusters and typologies increases error in description o Autonomy- set individual goals and try to achieve them o Freud- mental health is a mastery of love and health
