Sociology of Medicine and Health – Class 12 I. Common sense definition of social support A. Resources provided by other people B. Protect individuals from undue stress C. Provides things that people need to cope II. Problem with common sense definition A. Vague, over simplified – questions like are you married or not because not all marriages over support B. No theory of etiology – does not say how it works C. No theory of treatment III. James House’s systematic definition A. Emotional closeness – humans need it(love, etc.) i. Only need one person ii. Dots are not good for this, only count as a ½ iii. Other types of pets not good at all B. Instrumental aid i. Helping each other with resources (money, gifts, etc.) ii. Borrowing a pencil during a test iii. Babysitting can help fix a marriage by taking care of the sick kid so parents can work. If cannot get a babysitter one cannot go to work. This can cause a divorce C. Information i. 6 degrees of separation a. Between the person there are 6 links b. If you have a high occupation there are less links c. Occupation links better than geographical links ii. This is very important people jobs are harder to get a. To get a job you need information about job openings b. Most do not get their information through the newspaper – less that 5% c. Employment agencies get lots of money but less than 5% get jobs because they don’t get good job openings
