Unformatted text preview: Max Haubold 5/1 1/1 0 Reading 3: A Century of Change: the US Labor Force, 1950-2050 Summary people are the main determinants of actual labor force fluctuations- Three major factors have contributed to the change in trend of the labor force, however. These are— different birth patterns in the US over the last 50 year, the increased participation rate of women, and the growing racial diversity of the labor force. Each of these has contributed in different way, including a reshaping of the population shape over time (birth patterns), higher standard of living (women increasing in labor force), and racial diversity in the labor force. Analysis Since the article is backed with strictly quantitative data, it is difficult to argue any point, though I do see the implications. Right now our economy is in a recession. From other classes I have learned that businesses are turning to lower employees, people closer to the average American, for ideas and support. With the change in labor force turning to younger employed people, and a more diverse group, I feel that the shift can cause a gradual increase in our economy. The logic is simple- with a more diverse group, and one younger and more at ease with change, America will reap the benefits that all citizens have to offer, based on perspective.
