ART 102: HISTORY AND APPRECIATION OF ART II Summer 2010 MW 1:00 – 4:40 MC 338 NVCC-MANASSAS CAMPUS Barbara Lash Office: MH 4 th Floor Phone: (w) 703-257-6657 Office Hours: by appointment E-Mail: blash@nvcc.edu Blackboard address: http://www.bb.vccs.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION Art History 102 presents the glorious history and interpretation of architecture, sculpture, and painting of the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and the 19 th and 20 th century in Europe and America. We will also be examining the fascinating non-Western art after 1100 AD. The historical and cultural background of each period will be discussed in the readings and class discussions. OBJECTIVES This course examines the Italian Renaissance, Northern Renaissance, European Baroque, Rococo, American, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, the rise of Modernism, and the art since World War II in Europe and America. We will discuss visual arts, including painting, sculpture, architecture, and some minor arts. We will also study art of India, China, Japan, Africa, and the Pacific Cultures. Readings will be required for each class. You should take notes during class and review them in preparation for the next segment. The class will deepen and reinforce your comprehension of the
