How it Got Started. . v SNAP first started in 1939 and was originally called  the Food Stamp Program. v The Food Stamp Program became SNAP  (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) in  2008 v It was created to provide poor families with  assistance purchasing food they need. v SNAP is administered through each state, however  100% of benefits and 50% of administrative costs  are federally funded.

How to Qualify. . v You have to provide proof of income, a bill that shows your  address, any bank statements, proof of other income  (child support, SSI, disability) housing costs, medical  costs, dependent care expenses, etc. v You can only get SNAP benefits if you have children.  v People with out children can only receive them for 3  months within a 3 year period. v
