Unformatted text preview: M4B Directions: Read the following success story and follow the directions below. One student who comes to mind is a bright, fifth-grade boy from Costa Rica. At first, this boy had no English language skills. Although he was proficient in Spanish, his native language, he did not want to speak it, and he preferred to downplay his native culture in order to feel more accepted by the mainstreamed students. To build his self-esteem, I encouraged him to speak Spanish and to appreciate his own culture while learning about a new one. He loved computers, and through several word processing and drawing programs, he began writing stories and creating graphics. He would write a rough draft by hand and then type it on the computer, saving his files on disk. He soon became proficient enough to teach mainstreamed students to use the word processor’s features. He wrote poetry, dialogues, and short stories, and through this writing, his speaking abilities developed.
