A Bumpy Start Fineman sparks his reader’s interest immediately through use of an attention grabbing Magoffin in the opening statements of his article titled “A Bumpy Start”. The “ridiculously long run up to the national championship college football game”, which Fineman criticizes as giving the players too much time, indeed “engendering destructive name calling”, is a red herring designed to relax the readers mind and prepare them for the deeper and darker topic ahead: the situation in Washington D.C. However, diversion though his opening paragraph may be, parallels can easily be drawn between both states of affairs. For, in the second paragraph, Finemen delves into explaining and commenting on the kaleidoscope scene that is our capitol. Immediately, his tone changes from one of chipper disproval to one of serious disproval, using humor as a stepping stone to address certain issues.
