While some argue that marijuana should be legalized because of medicinal uses, taxation possibilities, and other reasons, the heated debate continues, as others see it as potentially habit forming, often damaging both its users and innocent bystanders. Possible solutions Knopp 2 Legalization -- The very word bears numerous connotations and sparks countless emotional responses in today’s American society to the point that simply mentioning the term amongst certain crowds can lead to fervent debates. Marijuana; weed; pot; mary jane; doobie; joint; reefer; broccoli, whatever name one refers to it as, in the United States it is currently illegal to possess, grow, or sell any of it for personal use, and has been since 1937 when the government passed a bill proclaiming the law wherein its illegal status came about. (“U.S. Policy”) Regardless, through the years, millions have used this substance, claiming that it has minimal negative effects and a number of positive effects. Still others claim that the negative effects are far from minimal, indeed truly detrimental. The discussions as to whether or not there should be an amendment legalizing the drug, as well as the police efforts to enforce the current law, rage on. In light of the new age ushered in by the inauguration of the latest President and the changes he has vowed to make, the issue’s prominence has been brought to a previously unseen level of high priority. Whatever his reasons are, Obama only just recently declared that he does not support legalization, though some do speculate that this decision was made partially due to pressure he received from his advisors. of marijuana hearsay. On the contrary, new information regarding the status of the debate on legalization is revealed each day by press and word of mouth. Celebrities, such as Michael Phelps and Mischa Barton, as well as many other widely respected individuals, have been caught using the drug and been placed on the stage of public ignominy, putting stress on the subject of whether or not the drug’s influence is a good one and bringing the subject into homes across the nation (Stantore). Anti-reformers remain steadfast in their beliefs and in their arguments against Knopp 3 legalization, with recent growth in the scope, efficiency, and focus of their rebuttals to the reformers’ urgings and law propositions. But simultaneously, recent research and developments give new bearing to the idea of legalization. Though the commonly referred to disadvantages of legalization are relatively few, their
