Chapter four notes When we recall emotions that we felt, we typically remember “hot” emotions which are physically and mentally intense experiences. Defining Emotion 1) Emotion - an intense reaction to an event that involved interpreting the meaning of the event, becoming physiologically aroused, labeling the experience as emotional, attempting to manage our reaction, and communicating this reaction in the form of emotional displays and disclosures a. Emotion is reactive, triggered by our perception of outside events a.i. Ex- finding out that a friend’s cancer is in remission allows you to experience joy a.ii. Ex- favorite roommate switching schools triggers sadness a.iii. Select, organize, and interpret b. Emotion involves physiological arousal in the form of increased heart rate, blood pressure, and adrenaline release c. You must become aware of your interpretation and arousal as “an emotion” c.i. You must consciously label them d. How we experience and express our emotions is constrained by historical, cultural, relational, and situational norms governing what is and isn’t appropriate e. The choices you make regarding emotion management are reflected outward in your verbal and nonverbal displays e.i. This is in the form of word choices. Exclamations or expletives, facial expressions, body posture, and gestures 2) Emoticons have been developed to represent expressions in text-only environments 3) Emotion- sharing - disclosing our emotions to others a. 75-95% of people share their experiences with one or more people who are close to them 4) Emotional contagion - when the experience of the same emotion rapidly spreads from one person to others a. When you experience joy, your family might feel it when you express your emotion Feelings and Moods 1) Feelings- short-term emotional reactions to events that generate only limited arousal; they typically trigger attempts to manage their experience or expression a. Experience dozens if not hundreds daily b. Ex- a parent calls you at a bad time making you feel annoyed c. Common feelings include- gratitude, concern, pleasure, tension, hope, relief 2) Moods - low-intensity states-such as boredom, contentment, grouchiness, or serenity- that are not caused by particular events and typically last longer than feelings or emotions a. Slow flowing emotional currents in our everyday lives
