A solution is made by dissolving 10.0 g of salt in 3.00 x 10 2 g of H 2 O. What is the composition of this solution in terms of percentage salt and percentage water by mass. 4. The following questions apply to the Law of Definite Proportions (or Constant Composition): Any sample of a pure compound contains the same elements in a fixed proportion by mass. a) Under very careful conditions, 4.23 grams of aluminum metal were heated in the presence of excess oxygen to yield 7.99 grams of aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ). Calculate the percent by mass composition of aluminum and oxygen in the Al 2 O 3 product. b) In one experiment, 1.00 gram of sodium metal was allowed to react with 10.00 grams of chlorine gas. The sodium was completely consumed and 2.54 grams of sodium chloride (table salt) was produced. In a second experiment, 1.00 gram of chlorine was allowed to react with 10.00 grams of sodium. The chlorine was completely consumed and 1.65 grams of sodium chloride was produced. Show that these results are consistent with the Law of Definite Composition. c) Sucrose (table sugar) has a mass composition of 42.1% C, 6.5% H, and 51.4% O. If a given sample of sucrose contains 0.625 gram C, how many grams of hydrogen and oxygen are present in the sample?
