The Space Race was a series of competitive science, techonnology and economic systems between the United States and the Soviet Union. It's purpose was to show which country was superior regarding spaceflight, for example who could put a man made spacecraft into orbit or walk on the moon first. . The cost of winning the race was very expensive for the US as they had invested around 25 billion dollars in the Gemini, Mercury and Apollo programmes and the Soviet's projects ranged around 4.8 billion to 10.1 billion dollars. A few risks that the people involved in the Space Race would have to take were loosing so much money in failed projects, exposing themselves to harmful radiation rays, having to go through isolation and confinement in closed spaces, the distance from Earth and gravity playing a part in foul play ending in tragic deaths, etc. On the other hand, the benefits of going ahead with their plans were that so many technological and scientific advances were accomplished in fields like telecommunication, micro-technology, computer science and solar power. We have hundreds of space satellites that orbit the Earth, providing us with television, gps, weather predictions and international communication. It has also enhanced our knowledge on astronomy, meteorology , physics, etc. The United States and Soviet Union engaged in the Space Race because they were afraid of either of them taking over space so they decided to go against each oher and see who would accomplish the most first. In the beginning, the Soviets were ahead with Sputnik and other projects while the US achieved the same things but slowly, which made them truly scared of their advancements. In the end, the US won since they were able to get a man on the Moon first but what truly put an end to the Space Race was In my opinion, The benefits of the Space Race were worth the risks and costs
