Diem’s Early Years – Creating S Vietnam 04/02/2008 10:09:00 1954 – Area that would become S Vietnam was in horrible conditions to become a state Weak sense of S Vietnamese nationalism compared to Vietnam (as a whole)  nationalism Over half of S Vietnam had been communist Saigon – gangster group bought control of Saigon city police Catholic Nationalist – Ngo Dinh Diem Supported by US and Lynden Johnson Served as Bao Dai’s minister of justice o proposed many reforms to benefit Vietnamese French denied these reforms, Diem resigned While genuinely patriotic, his Confucian elitism left him divorced from popular  views. Estranged from Vietminh In 1950, left Vietnam during war to live in US/Europe.  Lived in monasteries,  took vow of chastity at age 15. 1954 – Bao Dai appointed Ngo Dinh Diem as prime minister Some say this was because US put pressure on Bao Dai to do so.
