Book notes Chapter 1: Communicating and the Changing World of work Organizational Communication : interaction required to direct a group toward a set of common goals. Need to look at the evolution and the conditions that we need to adapt and respond to, to be successful. I. Inevitability of Change (p. 5) a. It surprises some people, especially people in their first “real” jobs… b. Need effective communication, that works for the specific company c. Need to recognize the need for change d. Change demands speedy, flexible responses e. Ask good questions about the organization and its policies, plans, etc. II. New Developments in the World of Work (p.6) a. Ethic abuse cases (Enron, WorldCom, Tyco…) were the beginning of the economic meltdown. b. The economy is irrefutably global, as actions and events in one country immediately affect al others c. The idea that “free markets know best” and should be permitted to operate with minimal oversight is a dangerous fiction. d. Increasing sophistication of non-profit companies, used to provide needed social services and to promote elements of the common good. III. Beyond Space: The Global Economy a. Globalization: the closer integration of the countries and peoples of the world which has been brought about by the enormous reduction of costs of transportation and communication, and the breaking down of artificial barriers to the flows of goods, services, capital, knowledge and people across borders. b. There are many models of global economy to consider c. 3 places will dominate the global marketplace in the next few decades c.i. Pacific Rim (China in particular) c.ii. North America (Canada especially) c.iii. European Union (EU) d. May erode US business because increased foreign competition e. Questionable Labor Practices (p. 9) e.i. Outsourcing - as businesses search to find the lowest labor costs (cheap labor) e.ii. NAFTA (North American free trade agreement) discussed the potential consequences of U.S. jobs being moved overseas in an attempt to reduce restrictions between US, Canada, and Mexico. e.ii.1. Do companies outsource and save money? Or give jobs to Americans to stimulate the employment/ economy? e.iii. Trafficking- illegal trade of humans across the border (including sexual trafficking). e.iii.1. Over 2 million each year f. Multicultural Management (p. 12)

f.i. The ability to adapt ones leadership style to both respond and make the most pervasive cultural differences in cultures and practices among a diverse employee population f.ii. Brand still needs to reflect the local tastes and tolerances f.iii. Requires high sophistication and global communications skills like speaking the language. f.iv. Religion also plays a role and companies find it difficult to define the line between work and personal beliefs. f.v.
