Dr. Hornsby PHIL 260-001 9/9/2009 To determine, for sure, that the android, Data, has a mind, the mind/body problem must be deeply explored. An android is purely physical. Humans are purely physical as well, so a materialist would believe that Data does have a mind. Materialism follows that humans are 100 percent physical beings. A dualist would not agree that Data has a mind. Dualism is the thought that humans exist with a spiritual mind, or soul, and a material body. If dualism is the correct theory to establish this case, civilized beings maintain something that Data cannot, which is a non-physical mind because he is an android. Idealism focuses on the idea that the mind is the sole reality in the world. Thus an idealist would evaluate Data and consider that he does in fact have a mind because the physical being of Data at that point is purely an illusion. Judged by idealism Data is proven to have a mind because he is still completely capable of response and emotion in the setting of the current trial.
