Whiting ENG 210-08 Assignment #3 8 September 2011 Text: Cinderella (1950 Disney animated film) Monsters: Stepmother (Lady Tremaine) Two Stepsisters (Anastasia and Drizella) Thesis #1: The Monster’s Body is a Cultural Body The monsters in this story are the Stepmother and Stepsisters of Cinderella. They are a prime example of the vain, aristocratic society within the story with their elegant attire and endless self- indulgence. A significant moment is when the stepsisters are trying to decide what to wear to the ball and they try to take each other’s clothes. They ultimately have ‘nothing to wear’ even though their closets are full of appropriate clothing for the event. Another important moment happens after the ball when representatives from the palace come in search for the owner of the glass slipper. The stepmother locks Cinderella in her room so she can’t try on the slipper and the two stepsisters fight over the slipper even though both of their feet are too big. Thesis #2: The Monster Always Escapes The monsters continue to be the Stepmother and Stepsisters. Although they do not get what they want in marrying into the royal family, they are still always going to be in Cinderella’s life. Cinderella found Prince Charming and they got married and lived happily ever after, but
