Purpose The purpose of this lab was to examine properties such as pH, and phosphate levels of various water samples with a pH meter and a spectroscope. By having each lab participant collect their own water sample variations in the ph and phosphate levels were guaranteed and evident after testing was completed. This experiment also required a series of serial dilutions to be made each of a decreasing ppm concentration from the original 10ppm solution that was provided. This series of dilutions required participants to be very exact in their measurements so each progressive dilution was of the right ppm concentration. By creating these dilutions the decrease of phosphate concentration could be seen as a higher percentage of water entered each solution. The second part of the lab had participants contaminate their water sample with dry lime (CaO), alum (Al2SO4), and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). After adding these substances to the water it was filtered first through water and then through activation
