knowledge of functional groups, and information in the background to identify various unknown molecules around the lab. In order to smell the substances a wafting motion was used so the odor wasn’t too overpowering or harmful. This lab unlike most others didn’t contain any data other than qualitative observations of the smell. This required strict discretion when recording observations so each unknown could be identified correctly. Once the unknowns were identified they were to be paired with the corresponding molecular model in the lab. Experimental Procedure Dillion, Stephanie “Chemical Structure and Smell” Chemistry 1051 Online Manual 04/03/11 03/29/11 http://www.chem.fsu.edu/chemlab/chm1051lmanual/smells/proced ure.html Steps: In order to determine first a list of possible substances and their smell was taken from the background for the lab and recorded in lab notebooks. Once in lab each of the unknowns was smelt and a guess for the closest smell and corresponding molecule was recorded. From there each of the chemical structures was analyzed
