Where as animals in hot climates have longer, narrower limbs body size and shape do burgmans rule and Allen's rule apply to humans? body weight decreases with mean annual temperature Environmental adaption of skin pigmentation three substances influence skin color melanin hemoglobin carotene solar radiation and skin color melanin is protective pigment in the skin melanin protects against harmful UV radiation humans originated in an equatorial environment (Africa) at high latitudes EG in N Europe, there is no selection for more lightly pigmented skin Solar radiation and skin color - Vitamin D is metabolized in the skin from UV - Vitamin d is necessary for calcium metabolism - Calcium metabolism is necessary for healthy bones2 - Low vitamin d produces rickets (bone deformation) - There is less exposure to uv radiation at higher latitudes
