Belen Cardenas Maletestinic OB profile 4/27/2009 Barack Obama was born in Honolulu in 1961. His father was from Kenya and his mother was a Caucasian lady from Kansas. His parents were divorced when he was two, and his mother remarried in Indonesia. His parents died while he was still a boy, and he moved back to Hawaii when he was ten. There he lived with his grandparents and attended Punahou Academy. He graduated with honors at that school. While Obama was growing up, he slowly became aware he was at a disadvantage to most people because of his lack of parental guidance. While he lived with his grandparents, he was never well off and he had a very unstable childhood. He experienced firsthand the struggles and obstacles that he had to overcome in order to have a decent way of life. While he studied in Punahou academy, Obama grew consciousness of the differences between the students regarding race and skin color. He experienced racism and discrimination first hand. “This is where Obama first became conscious of racism and what it meant to be African American” (Biography.com Obama p.1) He describes that Caucasians often had very low expectations of blacks. “People were satisfied as long as you were polite, courteous, and made no sudden moves”(Bio resource center Obama P.2) Obama, on the contrary, was described as a cheerful and polite fellow who would surprise many individuals with his manners. While he was impacted by all the events going on, something clicked in his mind. Obama felt that what he had experienced was social injustice, and was determined to someday make a difference for those who experienced the same. After graduating from college with a degree in political science, Obama’s urge to help others and make a difference in the community began to become a reality. His passion was so
