Unformatted text preview: The Blues Revival Pt. 1 - Acoustic AC337 American Blues Music Historical Context The late 1950s • Rock and Roll introduced a lot of young whites to the roots of rock (blues artists) • But by the late 50’s rock was sterile • The Civil Rights movement was in full swing • Folk music was being “rediscovered” Folk Music Folk music, as a genre, didn’t exist until scholars said it did… Before that it was just the informal music that people made Seminal to this were the Lomaxes… and as we mentioned earlier, Leadbelly. Alan Lomax was part of the left-wing intelligentsia and had close ties to people who were actually CP members. The left-wing always had problems recruiting from within the Black community so when Lomax brought Leadbelly north they (the left) saw him as an opportunity to make in roads with Blacks. Leadbelly became the darling of left-wing society and helped introduce young whites to the blues (at least a proto form of it). In the meantime people like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger were using folk music for social/political purposes and gaining popularity among a certain segment of America’s youth....
