Unformatted text preview: White Country Blues American Blues Music A New (Old) Chapter of the Blues This new chapter of the blues begins with the Allen Brothers: two young white musicians from Chattanooga, TN. They had already developed a reputation for playing tent shows and had created their own style of the blues by 1927. They recorded several songs for Columbia and looked like a couple of well- mannered college students, dressed in double-breasted suits instruments carefully tuned And they were young (21 and 26 respectively) Their songs - Chattanooga Blues, Coal Mine Blues, Laughin and Cryin Blues, and Salty Dog - were sent to New York to be pressed and the company, hearing the songs thought they were Black and released them through the Columbia 14000 Race Record series The Allens got upset because they thought it would hurt their chances to get into vaudeville if people thought they were Black, and they sued Columbia. They eventually dropped the suit and moved to Victor where they recorded a host of blues - Jake Walk Blues, Price of Cotton Blues, Roll Down the Line - and then a number of double entendre hokum songs - Slide Daddy Slide, Pile Drivin Papa, Shake it Ida Shake it, Warm Knees Blues, and No Low Down Hanging Around with the line: Come here mama just look at Kate, Shes doin her loving in a Cadillac Eight.
