Matt Deis Mr. McNerney PA English 9/13/09 Dave Eggers’ What is the What It was not until recently, within the past five years or so, that people began to become more aware of the civil unrest in Africa. When someone turns on the television and they see a commercial about the atrocities occurring in area’s like Darfur, they may pause, write down the telephone number presented on the screen and make a small donation. But once that commercial flashes away and Miley Cyrus pops up on the screen, Africa is forgotten. That check for twenty dollars is about the depth of an average American’s concern for an ethnic cleansing occurring overseas. Yes, they may write the check, it may pop into their minds from time to time, but no one ever bothers to ask “why?.” They send their money because the person on their television set is telling them to. They see pictures of starving children in the desert and feel sorry for them, but they don’t know why these kids are starving. They don’t know why people like Valentino Achak
