ISS 210 October 14, 2009 Ideological Totalism -Environmental Control -most important thing -rewards -rewards = consequences if you have control over the consequences, than you have control over the behavior of the person. -loading the language -unity/exclusive/certainty -use the language that will identify you with a group: terms (brother/sister/family members)…look to others in the group to figure out interpretation of the terms you don’t know…express unity. -words form a boundary that can help you identify who is and who isn’t apart of your group. -Doctrine is greater than the person -genuine/legitimate -a belief is more important than themselves -ex: give up your own life b/c you believe that saving those around you is more important…or willing to give up your life for freedom -The doctrine and honoring and following that doctrine is more important than what you might individually think/feel. -Mystical manipulation -higher purpose -select -justifies action -closed system -altruistic homicide if I kill this person they will be raised to a higher moral level and so will I. (re-incarnation) -demand for purity…absolute conformity to the group…if its not within the ideology of the group then it is seen as immoral. -confession
