Jeffrey Birenbaum Physics 22 Lab Lab: Simple Harmonic Motion 9/17/11 Introduction: In the first lab of this semester, we did three different set-ups to illustrate the idea of simple harmonic motion. Each trial tested a different dynamic of periodic motion: we started with a mass hanging from a spring, then tested a simple pendulum, and finished with a physical pendulum. These three different situations tested the idea of restoring force (F=-kx) which we have been discussing at length for the first two weeks of class. Mass Hanging from a String Procedure: First, we set up the situation using weight-differentiated plates, a spring, and a metal post to hold the string. A stop watch was also needed. Then, we conducted each trial according to the specifications (number of cycles, different mass, etc…). To conduct each trial in the elongation phase, the mass-and-spring system was simply brought down to its fully-stretched point and the displacement was calculated. Five different masses were used for this section. Displacement was the data taken from this section. For the second section of this trial, called the oscillation of the spring, the same five masses from the previous situation (each in a different trial) were pulled down gently and then released. The time to complete 10 full cycles was recorded and this data was then used to calculate the period squared so that the spring constant could be found. Simple Pendulum Procedure: First, we set up the situation using a clamp-and-stand, a string with a ball on it, and weight-differentiated plates. A stop watch was also needed. Then, we conducted each trial according to the specifications (number of cycles, different mass, different amplitude, etc…). To conduct each trial, the necessary amount of weighted plates was position on the ball and then the string was pulled back to the correct amplitude and released. Then, the amount of time to complete the necessary cycles was recorded and that value was used to calculate the period squared. Physical Pendulum Procedure: First, we set up the situation using a clamp-and-stand, a metal rod with a meter stick attached to it, and weight-differentiated plates. A stop watch was also needed.
