Jeffrey Birenbaum/Andreas Keeler/Drew Skrainka Physics 22 Lab #4 Lab: Electric Fields and Potentials 10/23/11 Introduction: The purpose of this experiment is to explore the concept of electric fields and potentials. An electric field is the space surrounding a charge that is altered and when an electric is in that space it feels a force. Work is the dot product of force multiplied by a distance, and moving a charge in an electric field is an example of work which is known as the potential difference, measured in Volts (V). During the course of this experiment two separate types of electric fields will be used on carbonized paper in order to determine equipotential lines of different voltages in these fields. Then using equipotential lines the electric field lines can be found to visually show the electric on the piece of carbonized paper. Procedure: The first step of the experiment is to be sure all necessary materials are present to conduct the experiment: 2 different sheets of carbonized paper (first sheet has one straight line and a circular electrode the second has two straight lines), cork board with pushpins, low-voltage power supply, digital voltmeter (DVM), and a colored pencil.
