PHE-340 Final Project Milestone Two: Draft of AnalysisII. AnalysisFactorsTo narrow down the broader public health issue of STD’s, we’ll specifically address social, behavioral, and cultural factors of Chlamydia in certain populations. Chlamydia is a genital bacterial infection that effects over 4 million people a year, in which 65% of those are women. Some basic societal issues include lack of education and communication, poverty, inadequate access to healthcare, and social inequalities. Individuals without insurance tend to notseek treatment because they can’t afford it however, people that do have insurance may not get treatment because of embarrassment or social stigmas. Risky behaviors that could lead to contracting Chlamydia are unprotected sex, certain sexual practices, like prostitution and males having sex with other males, and substance use. Cultural factors may be the community a person lives in, religious views on sex, and lack of education on prevention, transmission, and treatment.(Eng & Butler, 1997).Local InitiativesSeveral local initiatives have started in multiple communities all around Illinois. There have been more clinic openings in low income housing communities that provide STD screenings and resources. Many neighborhoods host local health fairs that provide a mobile health clinic offering free testing for most sexually transmitted diseases. Physicians, parents, and teachers are even collaborating to offer screenings at local high schools. By engaging with the community, we will soon see a reduction in STD disparities, promote sexual health, and advance community wellness by offering the education tools needed for prevention.
