Review for Final Communication 118 Fall, 2010 1. The ancient foundations of communication inquiry. a. The Sophistic movement and its beginning in Syracuse. The role of Corax. Taught that there is not truth. Don’t believe in truth or what is most likely right. Need to learn to play off of people’s emotions i. What was this movement? What made it an educational innovation? Emphasized style, delivery and emotional appeals. Taught the basics of speech organization. ii. The two contradictory emphasizes of the movement: Trickery and Serious inquiry. Taught ways of making the lesser seem the better cause. [Corax vs. Tisias: The case of an unpaid fee. iii. Gorgias. 1. His rejection of truth and the limitations of language. “There is no truth. If there was human minds could not comprehend it and if they could, human language could not express it.” 2. What positive influence did he have on the study of rhetoric? (What questions did he raise?) The point of the paradoxes was that language is a hopelessly flawed tool for finding the truth and it is all we have. iv. What all the Sophists share: 1. Teaching by learning short narratives. 2. Teaching how to establish probabilities based on the preexisting beliefs of the audience. 3. Students’ learning is shown by giving speeches that adapt their knowledge of particular subjects to an audience and its interests. b. Socrates and Plato. i. What started Socrates’ quest? What did he do that attracted young Athenians? Socrates respect for Spartan order. Activities in the market place: The gadfly of Athens ii. Why did Socrates think rhetoric was a false art – without subject matter of its own? Definition doesn’t equal truth iii. What was Socrates’ dialectical method? is a form of inquiry and debate between individuals with opposing viewpoints based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to illuminate ideas. iv. How did his student Plato adapt it? (definitions that cut at the joint.) Those who cannot offer definitions that clearly cut a the joint are ignorant and do not even know it. _______________________________________________________________________ _
