Legal Studies Paper Thesis : Internalized obligations, such as personal morality and legitimacy, help explain people’s decisions to obey the law. Tom Tyler - “Why do people obey the law” -Comes up with four points 1. Laws ought to be obeyed (legal authority/legitimacy) 2. Criminal behavior violates personal convictions (internalized morality) 3. Fear of being caught (deterrence) 4. Fear of disapproval from peers/community of origin (social pressure/obligation) Chicago Study results- “Although the Chicago study deals with legitimacy, personal morality is clearly a more important influence on compliance than legitimacy” (495) -“No compelling evidence that legitimacy in practice has the important role given it in theory in facilitating compliance” (491) -Internalized morality –personal morality -Normative factor: values, perceptions of authority, morality. -Personal morality is double-edged, your morals can go with or against the law.
