10/27/2009 Masculinity and Violence in Advertising While looking in various advertisements in different forms of media, one will notice common themes. One of these popular themes is male violence against females. Sometimes the violence cannot be seen right away, other times the violence is the main part of the ad. Often times the violence shown in these advertisements is used to a get a shock from the reader. The violence catches the reader’s eye, and therefore one will pay more attention to the ad. Although this gains publicity for the company, it opens up a bigger issue. Using violence against women in advertisements sends the wrong message to the public. These images objectify women and show male dominance. In a reading called, “Violence Against Women”, the authors write, “This broad definition implicitly recognizes that men as a group have power over women”. The authors are referring to a definition formed from the United Nations Declaration On Violence Against Women which states, “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in,
