- What is extinction? - The root of the word is to extinguish so it causes an image to die out, do not -imagine as a catastrophic thing - In order to understand it we need to understand what a species is - Not something that everyone is familiar with -The notion of extinction and mass extinction was not widely known for a long time - Georges cuvier (1769-1832)- made an observation that there are remains of old -species in the rocks so he thinks that there was a wide catastrophy that caused the massive death of many species, and that this happened periodicaly - To define a speciese is not very easy to do - A species is both in plants and animals but its easier to apply the term species to animals - The process of a birth of a species is speciation - many definitions for species - The most viable definition is “a group of organisms that interbreeds and produce viable offspring that are capable of reproducing - Ex. mule, it’s the offspring of two species but the organism itself cant reproduce
