February 1, 2010 Is it healthy to grow plants in a green house? Would there be less pesticide use? o Unfortunately No o Trap crops – by planting little perimeter around the crop and it reduces the pesticide use by 95% o 95% less pesticide use with trap crops with equal beetle control Humans have changed the genetic makeup of plants and animals for 100s of years Let’s talk about DNA… What is it o Double stranded o Backbone joined by nucleotides How is DNA like a blueprint o Nucleotide direct growth and development by the ‘genetic code’ o Four nucleotides: ATGC A goes with T G goes with C o 3 letter ‘words’ code for amino acids Ex. ATG o When you get a bunch of amino acids together you get a protein o Proteins (enzymes) regulate growth A gene is a sequence of DNA that contains genetic information o Codes for one or more protein DNA is organized into chromosomes o 2 copies for diploids, for vertebrates Allele: a sequence of DNA that codes for a gene
