IST 195 – Student Guide for Laboratory Session 9 Student Handout – IST 195 Lab Session Title of lab: Database Applications and Implications: Microsoft Access 2010 Learning goal: Databases are collections of information, and database programs are designed to maintain data in structured tables. In this lab we will be using Microsoft Access 2010 database program. Students will obtain basic skills necessary to work on Access database and learn about queries and relationships. Microsoft Access contains 7 different objects (Tables, Queries, Reports, Forms, Pages, Macros, and Modules). For this lab, we will use ACCESS features to write/modify a query and tables. In addition, students will also understand the concept of referential integrity and relationship between Tables. General instructions: Please pay careful attention to the lab’s instructions description of this lab session. Make sure to take notes on any key pieces of information that you will need to complete the lab. Both labs will require you to upload your MS Access and MS Word files with the requested information contained in each. When submitting this lab will be submitting two files, your MS Access database and your MS Word report. Please be sure that both files are the in requested formats and named as follows: MS Access Database – LAB9(yournetID).accdb MS Word - LAB9(yournetID).docx through LMS. For a B-Level grade, the database will have all of the queries from Part A and B; the word document will have all of the required write ups. For an A-level grade, the database will have the queries from Part A and B and the report; the word document will have all of the required write ups. Basic Lab (B-Level Grade) Part A1: Downloading your Lab 9 – Template document Step 1: Download the “Lab 9 – Template.docx” document for LMS. In this document you insert the required information and upload to LMS when submitting the lab for review. Make sure to save and rename the file LAB9(yournetID).docx Part A2: Downloading / Opening your MS Access Database and Creating Your Queries Step 1: You will need to download the MS Access database from LMS in order to complete this lab. Note : Make sure you download and save the database to your desktop and not to just try and open it from LMS. 1. Log in to the LMS 2. Under Lab Handouts select “Lab 9” 3. Click on the area labeled “Access Database for Lab 9” 4. Save the database file LAB9(yournetID).accdb to your desktop 5. You may now close or minimize the LMS browser IMPORTANT: If you are working from home and are not able to open the database, you must use the VPN facility, or come to the lab to complete the assignment.
