Unformatted text preview: Biol 394 in Spain (3 or 6 credits): ISU on the Mediterranean http://www.language.iastate.edu/valencia/ Biology 313, Lecture 26 Oct 28, 2011 ISU Life Science students at the turtle hospital in Valencia Chapter 10 : DNA Chemical Nature of the Gene Problems (through Section 10.3) Concept Checks: 1-8 Worked Problems: 1 Comprehension and Application Questions at end of Chapter: 1-14, 17-21, 24, 25, 27, 28, 31-34 (19, 21, 22, 23 answers in Assignments on Blackboard) Chapter 10 : DNA Chemical Nature of the Gene 1. Characteristics of genetic material 2. Early studies of DNA: what is it? 3. Early evidence that DNA is the genetic material 4. RNA as the genetic material 5. Structure of DNA A. Watson-Crick B. Primary structure C. Secondary Structure Review of Transforming Principle Experiments Walk through Overheads from 10-24-2011 Questions of Hershey and Chase: -- How does the T2 lytic cycle work?-- How do phage reproduce in bacteria?-- Is protein or DNA the genetic material? Lytic Cycle of T2 phage (as known today, not pre-1950s!) If DNA is the genetic material: (TO ELMO) A copy of it should be transferred from the infecting T2 phage to the T2 progeny phage Conclusion of Hershey and Chase: DNA, and not protein, enters the bacterial cell during bacteriophage infection and directs reproduction. This means that DNA is the genetic material! Chapter 10 : DNA Chemical Nature of the Gene 1. Characteristics of genetic material 2. Early studies of DNA: what is it? 3. Early evidence that DNA is the genetic material 4. RNA as the genetic material 5. Structure of DNA A. Watson-Crick B. Primary structure C. Secondary Structure Polynucleotide strand : nucleotides connected to one another via phosphodiester bonds (To Elmo) Polynucleotide strand Chapter 10 : DNA Chemical Nature of the Gene 1. Characteristics of genetic material 2. Early studies of DNA: what is it? 3. Early evidence that DNA is the genetic material 4. RNA as the genetic material 5. Structure of DNA A. Watson-Crick B. Primary structure C. Secondary Structure (TO ELMO) DNA double helix: two complementary and antiparallel nucleotide strands DNA is double- stranded, with each nucleotide strand running in opposite directions (it is antiparallel )....
