During the 70's the government took the unusual steps of identifying the information that food manufactures had to report on their food packages and the format in which to report this information. One of the most drastic changes to the way food is reported is in the area of food labeling. Food labeling is very important because it provides “reliable information about the calorie and nutrient content of food (Hamburg, Margaret. Letter to the FDA. 03 March 2010).” With knowledge about the calorie content, and nutrient content of food consumers can make an informed choice about what type of foods to eat and avoid based on diet planning principles such as adequacy, balance, kCalorie (energy) control, nutrient density, moderation and variety. The aforementioned principles are part of the diet-planning principles that are essential to weight management and proper nutritional nourishment.
