The Great Gatsby Chapter 2 summary - There is a valley of ashes between West Egg and NYC where New Yorks ashes are dumped - The men that live there shovel up the ashes - doctor T. J. Eckleburg, watch over everything that happens in the valley of ashes - One day Nick and Tom are riding the train into the city. Tom forces Nick out at one of the stops and takes him to George Wilson’s garage which is at the end of the Valley of ashes - Tom’s lover Myrtle is Wilson’s wife - Tom takes Nick and Myrtle to NYC - They have a party with Myrtle’s sister, Catherine and a couple named McKee - Catherine tells Nick she heard that Jay Gatsby is the nephew or cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm, the ruler of Germany during World War I - Nick says he got drunk the second time in his life at this party - Tom gives Myrtle a puppy as a gift and she begins to talk about Daisy - Tom tells Myrtle to stop talking about his wife, she says she can talk about whoever she wants and then Tom breaks her nose - Nick leaves and takes a train back to long island Chapter 3 summary - Gatsby throws parties at his mansion every weekend - Nick gets invited and goes to the party - No one knows that truth about Gatsby’s wealth - Nick runs into Jordan. Her friend, Lucille speculates that Gatsby was a German spy during the war. Nick also hears that Gatsby is a graduate of Oxford and that he once killed a man in cold blood. - Nick and Jordan are looking for Gatsby, instead, they find a man reading books in the library - At midnight they go outside and sit at a table with a handsome young man that says Nick looks familiar to him - they served in the same division during the war - He introduces himself as Jay Gatsby. He has a habit of calling everyone “old sport” He does not drink and stays away from the party, watching the guests in silence - At 2 in the morning, husbands and wives are arguing whether to leave or not - A Buller tells Jordan that Gatsby wants to see her - Nick starts to walk home and he sees owl eyes - Owl Eyes drunkenly declares that he washes his hands of the whole business.
