Bernini -lived from 1598-1680 ~David, 1623, Bernini -Cardinal Scipione Borghezi(uncle became Pope Paul V) commissioned this and 2more sculptures -family had Villa on hill -greatest sculptor of Baroque pd. -moment just before David throws the slingshot, dramatic moment -the face is a self-portrait of Bernini, and a future Pope Urbin VIII held mirror for him -he could do any kind of texture and was good at it ~Apollo and Daphne, 1622-1624, Bernini -lots of diagonals -figures reach out into space around them, called “open sculpture”

-Apollo chasing nymph Daphne, she doesn’t want this, so she calls father, the river God, and he turned her into a laurel tree just in time -moment is right when she’s turning into the tree -feet turning into roots, hands turning into branches -looking at ~Apollo Belvedere (Roman Copy), 350-325BC, Leochares -didn’t have to use a strut for open limbs ~Rape of Persephone, 1622-1624, Bernini -Pluto, god of underworld, trying to get Persephone, he got her and they married, her mother -goddess of corn and Pluto let Persephone go up to visit mother once a year(spring) -there is the 3 headed dog of underworld there -she has a year on her face -where he is grabbing her, her skin indents and looks just like real flesh -series of diagonals, reaching out into space, tries to push his face out of the way -emotionalism; her mouth open -her face has tears on it - Said her never surpassed these three sculptures ~Bernini, Self-Portrait, 1623, oil on canvas, Borghese Museum
