10.06.11 ~Venus of Urbino, 1538, Titian -this isn’t the Duke from “The Duke and Duchess of Urbino”, different one -was a private piece, but now in the Uffizi Museum -the reclining nude goes back to the ancient Greeks -until 1863, an artist couldn’t paint a female nude without a disguise -there is nothing in this piece that gives away that this female is a Venus, just a title -started by coating the canvas with a layer of redish brown, then painted on top (Titian Red) ~Danai, 1554, Titian -painted for the King of Spain, Phillip II, he commissioned a series of paintings of the loves of Jupiter -mythological story, Jupiter married to Juno, but disguises himself here as a shower of golden coins to abduct Danae -loosening up of the brush stroke, it is more painterly(can see artist’ brushwork), more expressive
