Unformatted text preview: Genesis Hernandez Women Studies 130 Thought Piece 1: "A Transforming Field" The reading of "A Transforming Field" discusses the careers of two biologists that undergo a sex change and how it impacted their career, as well as the differences between their careers once they had transitioned. First, there was Ben Barres, who transitioned from Barbara to Ben. One of his concerns is whether or not he could still have a career after transitioning. Although I am not interested in ever getting a sex change, Ben's concerns speak to me as a lesbian. I too wonder to what extent my sexual orientation will one day affect my possibilities of getting hired. It would be nice to believe that we live in a progressive country where my sexual orientation will not matter, especially in the field I am aiming to work in, but I think I am not that naive. I also found it quite interesting how Ben get that now that he had transitioned to a male, there was a distinct difference in how he was treated as a worker.
