Genesis Hernandez Chemistry Principles 1. Name three things that you learned from reading the "Atomic Weights - No Longer Constants of Nature" that will be useful in this class or as you anticipate other scientific endeavors in your future. (100-250 words) The article began with a brief explanation on how atomic weights and the abundances of isotopes are determined through the use of mass spectrometry. The understanding of how mass spectrometry works is key to understanding concepts presented in this article, as well as understanding concepts presented in our chemistry class. Aside from learning the history behind how atomic weights and the abundance of isotopes are determined, one of the biggest concepts that I learned from reading this article is the notion of uncertainty when it comes to using the constants we see on an ordinary periodic table. It raises a concern that is pivotal to any science students- the concern that the data we produce in the lab is not as accurate as we once thought. In addition, since there are so many

What questions does reading this article raise in your mind? (100-150 words) One of the biggest questions that was on my mind while reading this article was the question, "What kind of impact would be created in the scientific community now that atomic weight is no longer considered a constant?" Would it be detrimental and thereby slow down progress, or would it create data that is both more precise and accurate? I understand why we must recognize that there is variation when it comes to abundances of isotopes and atomic weight, but it seems to me, that by using intervals instead of the constants we have been using for decades, we are adding a whole new set of complications to the scientific community....
