ENGL 2148 (Hamm) 1 Grading Rubric This handout should give you a general idea of the criteria used for grading essays for ENGL 2148. Starred items are particularly important and weight more heavily on your grade (*). If you are unfamiliar with any of the items listed here, please consult your discussion leader for clarification. Score Category Strong Acceptable Unacceptable ARGUMENT Thesis (*) Paper presents an arguable claim that is consistent throughout the paper and that is fully supported by all the evidence. There is a thesis that presents an argument, though it is not easily identifiable, or it changes throughout the paper. No thesis evident; intended thesis paraphrases or summarizes work. Topic Sentences (*) All paragraphs begin with a topic sentence, one that supports the thesis. All paragraphs have a topic sentence (i.e., do not begin with a summary / paraphrase / introduction to a quotation), though not all clearly relate to the thesis. Most paragraphs lack
