Please feel free to write on the back. 1. In St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica , he addresses the issue of usury. What is usury, and does Aquinas consider it just or unjust? Usury is the practice of charging interest on a loan. Aquinas considers usury unjust because it is, in effect, charging for something that does not exist. The borrower is asked, by the usurious lender, to repay both the full amount of the loan, and an additional amount for the “use” of whatever is loaned (money, housing, food, etc.). Aquinas does allow that borrowing money and being forced to pay interest on that loan may not be unjust, if the money that you are borrowing is put to good use. The borrower in this case,
