POLI 2060 Quiz 1 September 1, 2011 Directions: Answer four (4) of the following six (6) questions. Each correct answer will be worth two and a half (2.5) points; partial credit will be given. This is a short answer format, therefore your answers should not exceed three or four sentences. Please feel free to write on the back of the quiz if you need more room, however keep the previous sentence in mind. 1. We have discussed at length the Platonic tri-partite model of the soul. Name the three parts of the soul and explain what each represents. The three parts of the soul (in Plato's model) are the Spirit (representing courage and honor), the Appetite (bodily desires and greed), and Reason (intellect, possibly conscience). Justice is produced in each individual by the balancing of the three parts of the soul; reason tells us what we must do, while spirit keeps the appetite in check and guarantees that the body will follow the dictates of reason. [See Plato's Republic Book 4] 2. At the beginning of Book IV of the Nicomachean Ethics
